Activated Carbon Testing
Deciding when activated carbon needs to be replaced is an important decision both environmentally and economically. At the Carbon Clean lab, we use the most effective testing methods to ensure our customers know precisely when their activated carbon needs to be replaced or regenerated.
Iodine Test
Iodine number is a widely used parameter for activated carbon testing for its simplicity and a rapid assessment of adsorbent quality. It gives an estimate of its surface area and porosity. The iodine number is defined as the milligrams of iodine adsorbed by one gram of carbon when various conditions in accordance with ASTM D4607 are met.
CTC Test
In the past one of the most widely used methods to estimate carbons adsorbtion capacity was to pass carbon tetrachloride (CTC) through a sample of carbon under controlled conditions. In recent times this method has lost favour on account of CTC’s negative environmental impact. However, utilising correlations we can still quantify a CTC number using more benign mediums such as butane. This test is quickly and easily performed in our lab.
